UBC Summer Vision Trip 2023

Summer 2023

Towards the end of 2023 summer break, I went to University of British Columbia (UBC) with some members of our church. We drove up to Vancouver, Canada, picked up some Tim Hortons, ketchup chips, dropped our stuff off at the Airbnb we were staying at and then drove to the UBC campus to go talk to students.

We started asking students about their lives and their opinions about religion and spirituality. Some conversations were short, but a lot of students were pretty open to talking to us. Something that really helped me muster up the confidence to walk up to a stranger and ask them about their thoughts on Christianity, religion, and the direction of their lives was the fact that I wasn’t alone; everyone else in our group was doing the same thing.

We spent about a day and a half talking to college students and the remaining two days we spent trying to talk to youth in malls or at local parks. Some of us were able to play volleyball at a highschool gym; we also were able to meet people at the park through other sports, and we were able to have some fun conversations with them. In a way, the lack of structure about the trip was a bit stressful, but, in hindsight, this UBC trip gave off the vibes of a spontaneous adventure and it was a lot of fun.

On our last day, our team ate a bunch of sushi, took some group photos next to some totem poles, and got to know each other a bit more during the car ride back to the border. The Canadian/American border had a lot of traffic, but we had a pair of karaoke mics split between our two cars, and got to sing a couple of songs together. A guy in the car next to us saw us  (because one of us was singing with his head peeking out the sunroof) and seemed to enjoy our karaoke antics. Although things were a bit stressful, we were still able to talk with people, share the gospel, and have a good time. Although our planned events didn’t get that many people, we improvised and gave away pizza and boba and somehow found different people to talk to. Although we got stuck in hour-long traffic at the border, we sang songs together and even brightened the environment for some cars around us. Something I appreciate about our group is our flexibility and willingness to create an enjoyable time despite our circumstances, which I think it’s made possible in part because of our shared vision to be more like Jesus and our community.
